The University of Warsaw (UW), established in 1816, is Poland's largest and finest university. From its beginning the UW has played a major role in the intellectual, political and cultural life of Poland, and has been recognized throughout the world as a leading academic centre in this part of Europe.

About

History

In 1795 the partitions of Poland left Warsaw with access only to the Academy of Vilnius; the oldest and most influential Polish academic center, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, became part of Habsburg Austria. The first to be established in Congress Poland were the Law School and the Medical School.

Education

The University of Warsaw offers a rich selection of postgraduate courses, MBA programmes and courses for non-students. This offer is also extended to foreign citizens. Those who are proficient in Polish language are unrestricted in their choice of courses, others may participate in courses which are delivered in languages other than Polish, mainly in English.

Open University courses are available to everyone who is at least 16 years old. The courses are based on bespoke programmes prepared by the lecturers of the University. The courses cover six domains: Languages & Nations, Culture & Art, People & Society, Business, Economy & Law, People & Environment, Science & Technology.

Research

The University’s teams have acquired recognition of the worldwide academic milieu in many areas of knowledge. Research projects and discoveries by the University’s scholars, in the fields of Natural Sciences as much as in the Humanities and Social Sciences, have won greatest respect.

The University of Warsaw is among the top 2% of the world’s universities and the leading university in Poland. The 3,500 teaching staff includes more than 820 professors, while the students can work on research teams and have the opportunity to study under experienced lecturers.

Services

Student services

The University canteen is located in the main campus, at the Obo´zna St. entrance gate, next to the Faculty of Polish Studies. The menu includes in-house soups, meat and vegetarian dishes. A two-course lunch costs ca. EUR 3 (PLN 12). If you are a canteen regular, you can buy a meal plan which allows you to buy meals at a reduced price.

Housing services

  • Residence halls / dormitories
The University of Warsaw offers 2800 places in six residence halls situated in various parts of Warsaw. Each hall has a quiet study lounge, a TV room, a computer room and a laundry facility
  • UW guest houses
The University has two guest houses in which UW guests – including faculty conference attendees or visiting professors – are offered discount accommodation rates. Discounts are also available to organised groups and for longer stays.

Library services

The University of Warsaw Library, designed by celebrated Polish architects, is situated in a modern building at 56/66 Dobra St., only a few minutes’ walk away from the main campus in Krakowskie Przedmie´scie. It is open seven days a week.

ICT services

The University buildings have 40 Internet hotspots, with the greatest number of access points at the Krakowskie Przedmie´scie campus. UW is part of Eduroam, a global system which allows UW staff and students to obtain Internet connectivity in various research and education centres worldwide without having to reconfigure their devices.

Medical services

  • In Poland, health insurance is obligatory for all students – regardless of whether you are planning to stay several months or several years.
  • University of Warsaw staff with an employment contract pay obligatory social security contributions and health insurance.

Campus life

  • ´Sródmie´scie (central Warsaw)
The main campus in Krakowskie Przedmie´scie Street, part of the city’s flagship Royal Route, right next to the residence of the President of Poland.
  • Ochota (central Warsaw)
In the area outlined by Zwirki i Wigury, Wawelska, Grójecka and Banacha Streets, there are science and natural science faculties and research units.
  • Sluzewiec (southern Warsaw)
Has the Faculty of Management and some Faculty of Applied Linguistics buildings. You can take bus service 174 from the “Orzycka” stop every 15 minutes to the city centre

Student clubs

The aim of the Student Union is to strengthen the position of student community so that they could have influence on The University and faculties matters, and appoint their representatives. Students’ Union may be an adventure, a challenge or a place, which gives an opportunity to develop passions, implement ideas, be creative and gain incomparable experience at the same time.

The Board of the University of Warsaw Students’ Union is an executive organ of Students’ Union at the University level. Not only does it deal with formal matters, but it also co-operates with and supports unit Students’ Unions.
