The University of Regensburg, founded in 1962, is located on a modern campus on the southern edge of a historic city dating back to the Middle Ages. UR offers excellent study conditions along with outstanding mentoring and advice especially for international students.
UR achieved 1st place in the category Living Average, and thus is ranked best place to live in Europe for international students! According to the overall results, the University of Regensburg is among the ten best universities in Germany. Quality of education at UR, for example, was awarded 2nd place in Germany (International Student Barometer).
UR offers not only bachelor programmes, but also a wide spectrum of master and doctoral programmes in its 11 faculties:
All of the facilities of the university can be found on the 150 hectare-wide campus just 15 minutes by bus from the Old City, enabling a relaxed learning enviroment. To provide for the well-being of the students, several cafeterias and a centrally-located larger cafeteria called the "Mensa" offer meals for lunch and in the evening.
The University Library consists of a central library and 11 sectional libraries that are divided throughout the campus premises (map). More than 3.8 million books, magazines, and scientific research materials are made accessible in a clearly laid-out user-card index (Regensburger Katalog), which is online in the Internet and also usable from all computers connected to the university network.
Students have access to a constantly growing number of personal computers in any one of the 32 computer labs on campus. Every student enrolled at the University of Regensburg automatically receives a personal computer account, which grants him/her free Internet and e-mail access. Most of the student residence halls have been connected directly to the university network, making it possible to conduct research at any time.
When designing and constructing the university, the needs of students with disabilities were highly taken into account. Most parts of the university are built and equipped to be accessible by wheelchair. Housing for students with special needs is also available. Furthermore, the computer centre as well as the library provides special facilities for visually impaired students.
Situated entirely on one central campus, the university is located south of Regensburg's inner city on a small incline south of the River Danube, and directly adjacent of the A 3 autobahn. The university itself consists of 150 hectares (280 acres) of land.
A lively cultural life has developed on the campus of the university, with more than 20 student theatre groups and various choirs and orchestras. Every semester, the university auditorium attracts a large audience from the city itself and beyond with its broad number of internationally renowned musical and theatrical performances.
Each semester, the Physical Education Centre organises a vast selection of recreational courses for all students ranging from aikido and canoeing to rock-climbing and yoga.
Last but not least, the attractiveness of the university is enhanced by the appeal of the city itself, with its ever-present traces of more than 2,000 years of history. Since July 2006, Regensburg has carried the UNESCO distinction World Heritage, which recognizes the unique character of the medieval city centre and its magnificent architectureabove all the Old Stone Bridge above the Danube and St. Peters Cathedral. Regensburgs cityscape still testifies to the economic and cultural vitality and the political eminence of the city during the Middle Ages.
Regensburgs Old Town has remained intact over the centuries and has been carefully renovated. The bustling activity of Regensburgs street cafés, restaurants and pubs as well as regularly happening music and cultural festivals draws citizens and visitors alike into this historic town.
In recent years Regensburg has witnessed a renaissance due partly to the founding of the University and its subsequent broadening of the academic community and partly to the settling of many modern industrial and technological ventures. Today Regensburg is experiencing an increase in prosperity, with one of the highest productivity rates in all of Germany and a steady growth in population.
