Much of science is based upon the application of mathematics. It provides the theoretical framework for physical sciences, for statistics and data analysis, as well as for computer science. New discoveries within mathematics affect our fundamental understanding of the world we live in, and the School's teaching and research reflect the diversity of mathematics today.SMSAS offers a range of single and joint honours degrees, postgraduate diploma programmes, Master's programmes and research programmes - see the listings on the right. Distinctive offerings include an option for students who wouldn't otherwise be eligible for degree level studies to take a Foundation Year, as well as four year MMath and MMathStat programmes. The School's range of postgraduate offerings will soon be strengthened even further by new programmes in, for example, Financial Engineering and Financial Risk Management. The School is strongly commited to student achievement and developing student creativity and employability, with "Year in Industry" placements offering solid work experience.
