With its 2,630 students, the Groupe ESA is the largest institute of higher education for life sciences in France. It offers a wide range of courses in 10 major sectors of activity : farming, food, landscape management, environment, horticulture, viticulture, retailing, trade, agribusiness management and town & country planning
The educational leadership was initially entrusted to the Jesuits (until the 1970s). To achieve excellence, the human dimension was emphasized, in addition to scientific and technical skills:
We still hold these values very dear.
To help our students "stay one step ahead" the ESA Group stays closely attuned to trends and changes. Thus, in the 20th century, we expanded to include:
Since 1984, the French government has considered agricultural education as a public service. In 2002, the Board of Administration, composed of former students who have all become successful professionals, reaffirmed the values and missions of the ESA group. Our educational project, faithful to the founding commitment, has been set forth in a charter.
"To grow freely, we must engage in solidarity. The ESA Group aims to train men and women who are curious about the world, concerned about the common good, caring and attentive to the poor (...). We welcome those who seek training or professional advancement in agriculture, agribusiness and farming, as well as human values training, to help them achieve personal development and excellence."
ESA belongs to a French consortium of 4 private agricultural university colleges called FESIA ('Fédération des Écoles Supérieures d’Ingénieurs en Agriculture'), which assembles 6,000 students, thus representing 30 % of all such students in the agricultural and food industry sectors in France. The diploma known as ‘Ingénieur’ awarded by the FESIA colleges, is accredited by the French Ministry of Agriculture and the official body recognising ‘Grandes Ecoles’ (the 'Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur'). This is to be sure a major asset when it comes to finding a job. The positions held by our graduates in and outside France amply testify to that.
Angers is a medium sized city that one can get about fairly easily, rarely getting snarled up in traffic jams.
There are also several pedestrian and bicycle only streets enabling easy access to city centre shops, bars, cinemas and other entertainment.
ESA is very close to city centre, less than ten minutes walk from the railway station, and no more than that to the major shops.
Students usually get about on foot, by bike, or on the bus. Indeed the efficient bus network often surprises our foreigners ; theres even a night service.
