Bilkent University was founded on October 20, 1984 by Ihsan Dogramaci, through the joint resolution of Ihsan Dogramaci Education Foundation, Ihsan Dogramaci Science and Research Foundation and Ihsan Dogramaci Health Foundation. The establishment of this private university was later approved by an act of Parliament. The aim was to create a center of excellence in higher education and research. The name “Bilkent”‘ exemplifies the founder’s aim, since it is an acronym of “bilim kenti” in Turkish for “city of science and knowledge.”
Bilkent University has been ranked 28th in the 2015 Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 list of the world's best young universities and 30th in the 2015 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. Chief among the factors that ensure a high standard of education at Bilkent is a faculty actively engaged in research. As mentors and instructors, they interact with students in modern classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories, connected by an extensive computer and internet infrastructure.
Bilkent actively invests in new educational and research technologies. Undergraduates may take part in projects conducted in high-tech facilities ranging from nanotechnology centers to digital content creation and editing laboratories. To support its students' academic success, Bilkent provides unlimited access to computer labs around the clock.
The Bilkent University Library is the most extensive academic library in the country. In addition to its large collection of books, the Library provides on-site and remote access to journals and databases to meet the scholarly needs of students and faculty.

The Career Center, another service established at the incentive of Bilkent’s founder early in the University’s development, helps final-year students to acquire the skills necessary to apply successfully for a job. The Center arranges interviews between representatives of major corporations and students seeking employment.
The Office of International Students plays a significant role on the internationalization path of Bilkent University by promoting its programs and providing support for all international academic affairs.
In order to ensure easy transition of the students, the Office provides assistance and guidance to both international degree-seeking students and incoming/outgoing exchange students through all phases of their academic and social conduct.
As well as providing information on procedural matters, such as application process, course selection and accommodation opportunities, via orientation programs and cultural trips, the Office of International Students offers ongoing help to all international students.
Our dormitories - consisting of 26 buildings with various designs and features, provide a peaceful, secure, comfortable, pleasant and hygienic atmosphere for more than 4,000 Turkish and international students from diverse backgrounds, who have chosen to take advantage of the excellence in higher education offered by Bilkent University.
Our special and standard dormitories, all located on our Main and East Campuses, offer single, double, triple, quadriple and suite accommodation alternatives for our students, at varying rates.
The Bilkent Computer Center (BCC) provides extensive computing resources and services to meet all of the University’s administrative, educational and research computing requirements.
The center maintains high performance file and computation servers as well as general-purpose labs equipped with personal computers. All are connected to BILNET, Bilkent University’s internet provider.
The Health Centers, located on the Main and East Campuses, provide health services to students and personnel. The Health Centers offer the services of a public health specialist, a pediatrician, a neurologist, general practitioners, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, psychiatrists, a dermatologist, an orthopedist, a dentist, an ENT specialist, three emergency medical technicians and one paramedic.
A student at Bilkent has plenty of opportunities to develop intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, culturally, socially and physically. If you like sports, all the facilities you need for exercise, practice and competition are provided.
