Founded in 1967 the university has its origins in the 1763 established Theodoro Palatinae (Palatine Academy of the Sciences Mannheim), which was founded by the later Duke of Bavaria Charles Theodor.
The University of Mannheim offers various bachelor's and master's programs as well as programs that culminate with a state examination. Among those are unique interdisciplinary programs such as Culture and Economy or Mannheim Business Law.
The University of Mannheim is one of the leading research institutions in Germany. In economic, business and social sciences the University has been ranking among the top 20 research institutions in Europe for many years. Mannheim's scholars mainly focus on research in fields that are relevant for society. These include but are not limited to the Political Economy of Reforms, Financial Markets, Governance, Regulation, Competition and Innovation or Migration and Multilingualism.
Excellent teaching and research is not the only factor for successful studies. The students union is responsible for financial aid, the on-campus canteen and cafeteria, housing in the student's halls of residence, the children's daycare centre, the social- and psychotherapeutic advice centre as well as the administration of the term ticket for public transport.
As an international student you can either apply for a room in one of the student residences off-campus or you can look for an apartment or a room on the private housing market. Our student residences are fully-furnished rooms and students usually share the kitchen and the bathroom with 2-5 room-mates. If you choose to look for different accommodation, the International Office will be happy to provide you with information and tips on finding an apartment in Mannheim or the greater area.
The universities in the region each have their own libraries which can be used by international researchers. Some of the research institutes also have special libraries. You will find some of them listed below and their office hours and user regulations on their homepages. Please take note that the hours are different on national holidays than during the semester.
