About

History

The University of Kassel, founded in 1971, is the newest university in the state of Hessen. At present, it has about 20.000 students. The number of staff is more than 2.365, including 312 professors, approximately 900 other academic staff, and about 1.500 technical and administrative staff.

Education

International summer and winter universities, intensive German language courses and orientation programmes for international students make Kassel an attractive place for studying. At present, students from over 115 countries are enrolled at the University of Kassel.They offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes in the fields of:

Housing services

  • Student Residence Halls
There are approximately 1,000 rooms available in student residence halls in Kassel and Witzenhausen, all of which are administered by Studentenwerk Kassel (Student Services).
  • Private Sector Accommodation
Students can alternatively search for accommodation in the private sector. There are a variety of single and shared flats in Kassel, both furnished and unfurnished. A room in a shared flat,a Wohngemeinschaft or WG in German, should be relatively easy to find with so many students living in the city.

Library services

The Media Library offers you an extensive reference collection (non-circulating items) of resources for autonomous learning (books, magazines, audio CDS, videos and DVDs). The adjacent Self Access Study Centre is also available to you - for your own independent use - and offers a wealth of language learning software.

Medical services

Germany allows freedom of choice in regard to doctors and medical care. This means that you can choose your doctor, but it is nevertheless recommended to have a family doctor. In case of illness, necessary medical check-up or vaccination, your family doctor will be familiar with your medical history and can also refer you to a hospital or specialist as well as prescribe specialised therapy.

Student Life

Campus life

The university city of Kassel has about 200,000 inhabitants. It is located in the centre of Germany and has many places of interest, most notably the beautiful hillside park around the castle of Wilhelmshöhe, the Habichtswald nature reserve, parks and leisure areas.Kassel is also the city of the Grimm Brothers, collectors of fairy tales and authors of the first dictionary of the German language.

Sports facilities

The Centre for University Sports (Zentrum für Hochschulsport) offers approximately 100 courses, workshops, sporting tours, and excursions in over 70 different kinds of sports. These include: martial arts, aerobic and strength training, games, dance, aquatics, and winter sports. Online registration takes place at the beginning of each semester. The minimum fee for employees is 10 Euro. The courses are open to guests if spots are available.

The University of Kassel orchestra has been playing for 15 years. It consists of 70 committed current and former students from various disciplines and plays an important role in the cultural life of Kassel and the surrounding area.
