Dating back to 1824, Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest and most popular universities in the UK. The University has over 36,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, including a diverse community of 3,000 international students from 120 countries.

About

History

Manchester Metropolitan University was established as a Polytechnic in 1970 and became a University in 1992.

It developed initially as a centre of Technology, Art and Design from Manchester Mechanics’ Institution (founded 1824) and Manchester School of Design (1838). The painter L. S. Lowry attended the art school in the years after the First World War.

Later schools of Commerce (founded 1889), Education (1878) and Domestic Science (f1880) were added along with colleges at Didsbury, Crewe, Alsager and the former Domestic and Trades College (1911).
