About Free University of Brussels

The VUB) is a dynamic and modern university with almost two centuries of history. The university and the university hospital are spread over two green campuses in the Brussels Capital Region. It counts over 13,000 students, 3,000 of whom are international. The campuses have everything a student needs: extensive libraries, modern computer labs, sport facilities, restaurants, a job service, cultural activities and language courses.

Accreditations of Free University of Brussels

VUB is registered with the Flemish government of Belgium as an institution of higher education. The VUB programmes are accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO, Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie). This official organisation was established by an international treaty between the Flemish and the Dutch governments to ensure the quality of higher education in both the Netherlands and Flanders.


Etterbeek Campus

Anyone who enters the grounds of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Etterbeek, located close to the heart of Brussels, can immediately take a deep breath - in the literal sense of the word. The buildings stand spread out amongst the greenery.

Most of the faculties are located on this campus, it is the liveliest of our two campuses. The activities mainly take place in the numerous auditoriums and labs, which bit by bit, have been outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, there is a modern sports centre with various rooms for sporting activities, a football pitch encircled by a running track and an on-campus swimming pool. For eating out, there is not just the student restaurant, but also some snack bars ('t Complex, Opinio).

Jette Campus

The campus in Jette is also a fully-fledged campus. The medical instructor, researcher or student can find well-equipped classrooms, student housing, a day-care centre for children, a restaurant and a modern sports complex. All medical courses and research, the so-called life sciences (medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, the biomedical and paramedical sciences) take place here.

Whoever mentions the medical campus of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, cannot forget to mention the University Hospital. It is only logical: with more than 25,000 patients admitted annually, it is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium.

Student life at Free University of Brussels

Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The Brussels-Capital Region, one of Belgium's three regions, is also a city with 19 boroughs covering 162 km2 and housing a million inhabitants. It is officially bilingual (French and Dutch), although it boasts an astonishing variety of cultures, styles and nationalities. Being the capital of an expanding Europe, Brussels is an international city like no other. 31% of its population is of foreign origin, and this makes for a unique atmosphere in which cultures interact easily with one another. English is rapidly becoming an important language in Brussels because of the numerous international political organizations. Language is not a barrier in the capital of Europe. These same differences and contrasts can be found in architectural Brussels' various styles, where you will find Gothic cathedrals and churches next to beautiful art nouveau and art deco houses.

Compared to f.e. London or Paris, Brussels is a relatively cheap city to live. Rental prices in Belgium are low compared with other countries.
