The University of the Aegean was found in 1920. It is an international research oriented university. It was re-established in 1984. It is one of the largest universities in Greece. About 12000 students are studied here.

The University Units are: UNIVERSITY UNIT OF MYTILENE, UNIVERSITY UNIT OF CHIOS, UNIVERSITY UNIT OF SYROS , UNIVERSITY UNIT OF SAMOS, UNIVERSITY UNIT OF RHODES. The University has five Schools and sixteen Departments. The schools are: SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, SCHOOL OF THE ENVIRONMENT, SCHOOL OF BUSINESS , SCHOOL OF SCIENCES , SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES And the departments are: Department of Social Anthropology and History, Department of Geography, Department of Sociology, Department of Cultural Technology and Communication, Department of Environment, Department of Marine Sciences, Food and Nutrition Sciences (based in Lemnos), Department of Business Administration, Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport, Department of Financial and Management Engineering, Department of Mathematics, Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, Department of Statistics and Actuarial-Financial Mathematics, Department of Primary Education, Department of Pre-school Education and Educational Design, Department of Mediterranean Studies, Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering.
