Lyon 2 Lumière University is one of the first universities to have integrated the European higher education scheme right from the start of the academic year 2004. The courses are organised within the scope of the LMD' system (Bachelor's degree - Master's degree - PhD).



Lyon had to wait till the first third of the 19th century for the emergence of the first university-like institutions: the Science faculty in 1834, the Arts faculty in 1838, then the Law faculty in 1875, and the joint faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1877. Each of these faculties was independent of the other, and it was only in 1896.


The educational offering includes 38 undergraduate degrees, 20 vocational undergraduate degrees, 140 master’s specialisations, 10 DUT (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie – Technological University Degree) specialisations and 49 university degrees.

The Student Centre (fr. Maison de l'Etudiant' or MDE) works to make student services accessible to every student at the University !

Housing services

There are four different types of accommodation in the residence

  • "chambre rénovée" (basic room, shared kitchen, shower and toilets)
  • "chambre réhabilitée" (room with its own shower and toilet. Shard kitchen)
  • "chambre en appartement partagé" (similar to flat sharing with 5 students)
  • "Studio"

Library services

There are several libraries spread over both campuses (Porte des Alpes and Berges du Rhône) run by Information Services; certain libraries housing very specialised collections are mainly reserved for researchers, whilst others are open to everyone whatever the level of study.

ICT services

Open-access IT rooms are available to all students at the UniversityThese rooms are located on both campuses.

  • Equipped with indispensable office software applications and printers, which can be used to process documents and other files you may need for your studies, these rooms also have Internet access.

Medical services

At the University Lumière Lyon 2, any student encountering difficulties that may interfere with their personal or academic development can obtain advice and counselling from a team of professionals at the University Health Centre (fr. Service de Médecine Préventive Universitaire or MPU) (preventative medicine only), as well as from dedicated health and advice desks.

Student Life

Campus life

Lyon was one of the last big cities in France to be equipped with a university. Being an industrial and a commercial city, this delay can be explained by the fear of turning youngsters away from business.

Lyon 2 students have access to 400 computers and 34 Wi-fi access points. The Filtre' building (Innovative Training in Languages and Technology for Research and Education) includes the Language Centre and part of the TICE department (Information and Communication Technologies for Education).

Sports facilities
