WdKA provides top-quality art education. Our courses in art and design subjects are geared to the international level that sets the standards in these fields. WdKA is driven by curiosity, a desire to experiment and a passion for innovation. Our profile can be summarised in five core concepts: high artistic merit; dedicated; international; socially involved; and media driven. We recently added a sixth concept: interdisciplinary which we also refer to as 'cross-overs'. The positive attitude adopted by WdKA to defining and propagating its core concepts can be described as 'self-willed' and 'self-aware'. WdKA is renowned for its clear vision on the professional fields in which it teaches students and for the way in which its educational tasks in this respect are organised. WdKA highly values social interaction and involvement, which form the basis for our vision on education in all art and design disciplines.
The 'Kunstkelder' or Art Cellar is WdKA's own section within the media library of the Hogeschool Rotterdam. It's is located in the building at Wijnhaven 61. The collection of books, periodicals, CDs and videos is comprehensive and up-to-date. The mediatheque also has study and workplaces with computers, facilities for watching videos and DVDs, and copying facilities. Last of all, directly opposite WdKA you will find the Rotterdam City Library and the Centrale Discotheek (CD Library).
Rotterdam has a thriving and exciting cultural infrastructure something that is absolutely essential for high-quality education in the arts. Internationally renowned institutions include the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), the Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media, and Witte de With, center for contemporary art. In addition, you will find there are many internationally active galleries, artists initiatives and, of course, the festivals: International Film Festival Rotterdam, September in Rotterdam, and many more.
Willem de Kooning Academy collaborates extensively with cultural institutions and businesses in the city. Many of our former students have therefore found sources of inspiration and discovered their chosen field of work in this urban culture. Last but not least, there is a rich cultural nightlife.
