The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna is the only academic and research institution in Austria that focusses on the veterinary sciences and the oldest such institution in the German-speaking world. It was founded in 1765. Since 1996 the university campus has been located in the 21st district of Vienna. About 1000 employees and 2300 students work on the campus, which also houses the university's animal hospital and various spin-off-enterprises and branches of business partners. Established: In 1765 as the K. and K. Horse Curing and Operation School according to the founding edict by the Empress Maria Theresia. Teaching began in December 1767.

Location: 21nd district in the north of Vienna (since 1996, before 1996 in the 3rd district)

Campus: 47 buildings spread over an area of 15 ha, completed in 1996.


Research is concentrated into four main areas or profile lines:

  • Profile line 1 - Regulation of physiological and pathophysiological processes.
  • Profile line 2 Infection and prevention
  • Profile line 3 Biomedicine and biotechnology
  • Profile line 4 Food safety and risk analysis
