University is an institution which is rightly considered one of the greatest contributions of the peoples of Europe to the world's cultural heritage. The University of Belgrade is a state university. Its main activities in the fields of higher education and scientific research are activities of public interest, and they are carried out in accordance with the legal regulations. If you decide to rent an apartment in Belgrade, it will cost you the same as about anyone else in Europe if you chose an apartment in the suburbs. However, it might take you between 30 minutes and one hour to reach your university. If you choose to rent an apartment in the center, prices are a little higher, but you will enjoy the vibrant life Belgrade has to offer.
There are 11 student residencies in Belgrade, including Studentski Grad, which, in addition to dormitories and a restaurant, has two libraries, a cinema and a theater building, conference halls and an open stage for summer concerts. Student residencies are vibrant places, where you can live, eat, study and meet new friends and colleagues.
Accommodation in student dormitories is possible, the price ranges from 70 to 90 Euros per month. Please note that there is a selection process involved. You can engage in various sports in Belgrade.
Whether you are only getting into shape or are already a sports wiz, all you need to do is select the activity you enjoy most. There are 16 sports centres, 7 sports halls, 7 stadiums and 6 swimming pools in the city. Belgrade has a hippodrome and a modern and expansive golf course on Ada Ciganlija. Several sports manifestations are held each year in Belgrade Belgrade Marathon, Car races on U´ce, the Politika Race, Race through History, "Tour de Danube" bicycle race, Sport fest, ATP tournaments. Of all those listed, the Belgrade Marathon is the best known and most popular. Belgrade is a frequent host to European and World cups and championships in basketball, water polo and volleyball. During the Universiade of 2009 Belgrade hosted over 750 accredited journalists and over 8,000 contestants in 15 sports and 203 disciplines.
The theatres of Belgrade are of the repertoire type, meaning that each night a different show is playing at the twenty-odd theatres around the city, providing plenty of choice. The theatre season lasts from October to June and if you know the play you choose to see, language will not represent an issue. Should you find yourself in Belgrade in September, make sure to reserve a ticket for BITEF, the world-renowned Belgrade International Theatre Festival with guests from the most interesting troupes and theatres of today. The artistic expression of the city can be discovered in over 50 exhibition spaces, while the most important new work of local authors in fine and applied arts and design can be found at the October Salon. Founded in 1969, the Belgrade Music Festival BEMUS is the oldest and the most prominent music festival in Serbia and one of the most distinctive classical music festivals in the South-Eastern Europe. Apart from the well established performers, BEMUS opens its venues to young musicians who are ready to launch their professional careers. Equal attention is committed to exclusive contemporary music and stage productions (operas, ballets and multimedia projects) which often reach for alternative artistic achievements.
The exciting nightlife of Belgrade is gaining momentum. Belgrade is said to be the new capital of cool, the place where the best nightlife in Europe is happening. Bars, clubs, rafts and casinos work every day of the week deep into the night. A contagious atmosphere or crazy parties and good fun rules them until the early morning hours. From alternative to reggae, brass bands and gypsy music to turbo folk, from techno to heavy metal, Belgrade is bouncing in one of its many rhythms every night. The number of clubs is growing daily, the scene headed by a team of experienced DJs. An increasing number of music and DJ stars come to Belgrade, attracted by stories of the city that loves to dance. The defining detail of the Belgrade clubbing scene are the river banks. Ships and rafts are open throughout the year, although the largest crowd gathers, naturally, in the summer. Ada Ciganlija is a fascinating zone of nightlife in Belgrade. Visit one of the rafts on the Sava or Danube quay. Entrance to the clubs is mostly free, taxis are not expensive, and neither are alcoholic drinks. Best of all, Belgraders are a friendly bunch and will be happy to party with you. Strahinji´ca Bana Street is a unique fun zone. A single city centre street houses around twenty cafes, restaurants and bars, always filled with loud and cheerful Belgraders.
