The Master’s degree program within the Department of Communication and Creative Arts at Purdue University Calumet offers a broad range of courses covering theories and research methodologies in the following areas: mass communication, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance studies, political communication, rhetoric and speech communication. The program is highly flexible and allows each graduate student to plan his/her course of study in consultation with an academic advisor.


The program is designed specifically to meet the needs of individuals who live and work in northwest Indiana and who want to complete advanced, highly focused, courses of study in human communication. Scores of graduate students have successfully completed the program to qualify for career advancement to prepare for doctoral study, or to satisfy their own curiosity about the most fundamental human behaviors, communication.

The program is unique in northwest Indiana; no other campus in this area has one. The courses leading to the Master of Arts in Communication degree are offered during evening hours because that’s when managers, teachers, account executives, and other information specialists have told us they can take courses.

The courses leading to the Master of Arts in Communication degree are scheduled so that it is possible – although it requires dedication and perseverance – to complete the degree program in two years.

Academic Requirements

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission Process
Official Admission
  • An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0, based on a 4.0 scale.
  • An undergraduate degree in Communication, related disciplines, or strong minor.
  • Completion of regular application process (application form, application fee, 2 copies of official transcripts from ALL institutions attended, 3 letters of recommendations, statement of purpose).
Conditional Admission
  • A prospective student whose overall undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, may be admitted conditionally. He/she is required to maintain a 3.0 graduation index for the first 9-12 hours in order to continue in the program. The department may pose other requirements for official admission.
  • Any prospective student may enroll in graduate-level courses prior to applying for official admission into the graduate program by completing a “temporary” application form (online). These courses (limited to 4 graduate level courses or 12 credit hours) may be applied toward the degree requirements upon official admission.
