The University of Wyoming's Master of Arts in English offers its graduate students a unique opportunity to receive a solid base in English Studies, with a concentration in either literature or composition and rhetoric. Our flexible requirements and innovative course offerings allow our students to tailor their programs to their academic interests and career goals.


The program offers graduate assistantships to all admitted students, providing both funding and a variety of professional development and teach opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

The Masters degree in English builds upon the skills acquired as an undergraduate:

• Read, interpret, and write about a diverse range of texts in English, for example literature, film, digital media, and popular culture.

• Understand those texts analytically and critically.

• Understand those texts on the basis of careful close reading.

• Understand those texts through past and current literary theory.

• Understand that those texts are culturally constructed in time, place, and tradition.

• Understand how those texts inform culture.

• Participate in the critical and cultural discourses of English.

• Participate clearly and appropriately through multiple spoken and written forms.

Programme Structure

26 Hours of Course Work and 4 Hours of Thesis Research

  • English 5010, Practical English: Writing and Literature taken Fall Semester of your first year.
  • A course in contemporary critical theory, taken Spring Semester of your first year.
  • One four-credit course in three of the following distribution areas: period, author, genre.
  • At least 6 hours of elective credit.
  • English 5960, Thesis Research: Classroom Workshop taken Fall Semester of your second year.
  • Additional thesis research credits may be taken as desired.

All coursework must be at the 5000 level. With the permission of their advisor, students may take four credit hours outside of the department to meet their program requirements.

  • Submit GRE general test scores using school code 4855.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.
  • Submit a 10-12 page critical writing sample.
  • Submit a 500 word statement of purpose.
  • Submit a UW graduate assistantship application form.
  • Submit a 100 word statement of purpose with the graduate assistantship application that discusses why you want to teach and what you have to bring to the classroom.
