The Cell and Molecular Biology master's degree is part of the campus-wide, interdisciplinary Molecular Biosciences graduate program. Participating faculty are from many departments within the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM), College of Science (COS), and College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR).

About

The highly interactive program offers a wide range of study options dealing with contemporary biophysics, cancer, cell biology, chemical biology, immunology, insect biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and plant biology.

The students pursue a rigorous training program with diverse research opportunities using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. A shared first year curriculum and series of lab rotations introduce students to the full range of the molecular biosciences research community.

The degree is excellent preparation for careers in biological and biomedical research, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Students who seek admission to the program should have completed the following course requirements: 8 credits of both organic chemistry and biology, 6 credits of physics and 4 credits of calculus. If a student is admitted with a deficiency in these courses, the required courses must be completed during the first year of graduate study.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Minimum qualifications for admittance to an M.S./Ph.D. degree program

    • Undergraduate degree in a related area
    • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for the M.S. program or 3.0 for the Ph.D. program on a 4.0 scale (transcripts will be required)
    • Combined Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores of 300 or higher (a GRE subject test—e.g. Biology—is not required)
    • Competitive TOEFL exam score if English is your second language
    • Completion of the following courses
      • Calculus, 5 semester hours (or equivalent)
      • Physics, 6 semester hours
      • Organic Chemistry, 8 semester hours
      • Biology, 8 semester hours
