The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) offered by the University of Groningen is a two-year research oriented master programme for talented and motivated students who are interested in understanding evolution in all its facets.

The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) is offered by the University of Groningen. This multidisciplinary programme will address the driving forces of evolution at all levels of organismal organisation (from cells and individuals to populations and ecosystems), and it will allow students to study all kinds of organisms (microorganisms, plants, animals) in a diversity of habitats (marine as well as terrestrial) with a variety of approaches (lab, field, theory).

MEME is a two-year research-oriented master programme for talented and motivated students who are interested in understanding evolution in all its facets. It is a joint project between four European universities (University of Groningen, Netherlands; Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, Germany; Uppsala University, Sweden; University of Montpellier 2, France) and Harvard University (USA). Students start their studies with a semester in either Groningen or Uppsala, and then move to either Montpellier or Munich for their second semester. In the third and fourth semesters, students can choose the partner university at which to carry out their individual research projects. Upon completion of the programme, students are awarded a double degree from two partner universities.

Four European universities have joined forces with Harvard University (USA) as an associated partner. MEME offers students the opportunity to compose an individual study programme in evolutionary biology by combining elements from the complementary programmes at the partner universities.

The European Commission will grant a number of scholarships to highly qualified students to participate in the MEME programme. Scholarships are typically awarded to those students who were ranked highest during the selection procedure.

Students who successfully complete the MEME programme receive degrees from two of the European partner universities. MEME strives for issuing a joint degree in the future.

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).
