York University's Post-Graduate Certificate in Accounting will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of accounting and the professional competencies critical to success in getting hired and promoted. This York University School of Continuing program responds to the growing needs of industry professionals and employers by offering formal, flexible and accessible accounting education, skill validation and credentialing.

Success in your career requires more than technical accounting knowledge. To excel, you will also develop the competencies top employers tell us they value most — including emotional intelligence, problem solving, written and verbal communications, business acumen, critical thinking, decision making, and project management. The focus on these professional competencies throughout your coursework and your capstone project will improve your leadership strength and effectiveness.

The York University School of Continuing Studies's program culminates with a unique final capstone course — a tangible way to demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge to real-world business challenges.

Students who complete this Certificate will gain the skills and competencies expected by Canadian employers and will be prepared to pursue entry to mid-level positions including supervisory roles in finance and accounting.

Graduates of this Certificate along with graduates of the Certificate in Advanced Professional Accounting (coming Fall 2017) will meet the entry pre-requisite education requirements for the graduate level CPA Professional Education Program (PEP), the critical foundation of the CPA certification program. The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is the preferred credential by employers in the finance and accounting field in Canada.

Drawing on York’s half-century of expertise in teaching working professionals, the Post-Graduate Certificate in Accounting has been designed to help you gain many benefits that traditional programs cannot provide:

  • a deeper understanding of accounting,
  • an opportunity to develop and practice the strategic thinking, influencing, and communicating skills that employers are looking for,
  • a richer network of professional contacts, and
  • complete the program more quickly while successfully balancing your professional and personal responsibilities.

Interact with a rich network of peers who are completing the program on the same schedule. Take engaging courses taught by industry experts who will teach you to immediately apply the concepts covered in class to your current job.

The York University Post-Graduate Certificate in Accounting was designed in consultation with senior industry executives, thought leaders and prominent York University academics to ensure our graduates have the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for when hiring and promoting.

Choose to study part-time, full-time, in-class, or online. Complete the program much more quickly than comparable certificates:

  • part-time in just seventeen months

Programme Structure

CPA Designation

The Post-Graduate Certificate in Accounting when combined with the Certificate in Advanced Professional Accounting (coming Fall 2017) will prepare you for entry into the CPA PEP.

Both certificates can be completed in less than two years of full-time study. This is much faster than traditional university continuing education accounting programs which can take three years or more to complete the required courses.

The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is globally recognized and provides a wealth of opportunities to those that hold it. The mean average compensation of CPAs working in Canada is $151,000 (figure in Canadian dollars).

Completing your certificate at York University, a comprehensive university, better prepares you for your CPA designation than a college certificate as the intensive, meaningful instruction is a natural step towards the graduate level courses you will be required to take in the CPA PEP.
