The Outdoor and Sustainability Education programme at Linköping University provides students with knowledge and understanding of how outdoor studies can enhance learning and contribute to better health, a sustainable development and an active citizenship.


The Outdoor and Sustainability Education programme focuses on experiential learning based on nature, culture and society. Teaching includes outdoor field-related experiences and learning in and via natural and cultural landscapes.

The advanced courses in educational science will help teachers and other educators to understand learning processes and how the society, nature and the cultural landscape can be used as resources for learning and understanding. The Linköping University's programme focuses on experiential learning based on nature, culture and society, using the natural and cultural landscapes in the outdoors as resources for learning and understanding.

As a student you will:

  • increase your knowledge about children’s and young people’s understanding and learning processes in the extended classroom
  • further develop your knowledge of how outdoor environmental education and outdoor life can contribute to awareness of environmental issues
  • learn about the connections between outdoor education and health, citizenship and sustainability
  • develop a thematic perspective on how the urban and rural landscape can be used as a resource for learning
  • develop your skills in field work in real environments

Students pay for trips, food and lodging during the excursions included in the programme.

Career opportunities

Following the final examination, students will have gained theoretical knowledge and practical experience within the field of outdoor education for working with pedagogical development in schools or other educational fields in society.

Alternatively, students may continue to conduct research leading to a doctoral degree.

Courses Included

Theories and Practice of Outdoor Education and Learning

The theoretical traditions of ideas and frame, with focus on pragmatism and the reform pedagogy movement, provide the framework for the content of the module. The course treats the impact that outdoor education has on health, learning, physical and motor skills. The aim of the course is for the student to develop a theoretical basis for reflection on the importance of environment and place for learning.

Methods of Inquiry and Theories of Research

This module presents central scientific concepts and methods. Through critical analysis and problematisation a basis is created for the choice of theoretical platform and method. Based on their own experiences and interests, students will formulate research questions to be processed in systematic reflection.

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • A Teacher or Pre-school Teacher Degree of at least 180 ECTS or a Bachelor's Degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, with a major in Education or the equivalent.
  • English, corresponding to the level of English achieved in Swedish upper secondary education (English B/ English 6).
