Utrecht's University Master of Science in Environmental Biology covers the fundamental life processes of plants and microbes. 

The interdisciplinary course content also offers you the chance to examine animal behaviour from an ecological and evolutionary perspective.


Within the Environmental Biology Master, you can select a specialised track from the following:

A significant proportion of Environmental Biology Master’s students continue on to PhD studies. Utrecht University provides ample opportunities for PhD research, such as the PhD programme in Environmental Biology. However, there are also excellent opportunities to perform your PhD research elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad. 

Graduates that do not choose to follow a PhD programme can find employment in research institutes, such as RIVM, TNO, KNAW-NIOO, NIOZ, Plant Research International, in environmental consultancy firms, such as Arcadis, Royal Haskoning, Tauw Milieu, or Witteveen en Bos, or in or private or government nature protection or restoration organisations, such as World Wildlife Foundation, Natuurmonumenten, Wetlands International, Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, provincial water boards, or ministries and provincial authorities.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Besides TOEFL, IELTS and CAE, also Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE - at least Grade C) is accepted as a proof of English Proficiency.

You will be considered for admission to the Master's programme Environmental Biology if you hold a University bachelor degree and can demonstrate:

  • Basic knowledge in the field of Biology (minimum level Bachelor year 1)
  • In depth knowledge and insight in ecology (track natural research management), plant physiology, or molecular aspects of plant biology (track plant biology), marine biology (track marine biology), microbiology (track fungal biology) and/or behavioural biology (track behavioural ecology). (level equal to level of Dutch University Bachelor year 3)
  • Knowledge of biostatistics
  • Mastery of methods and techniques in the above mentioned areas. (level equal to level of Dutch University Bachelor year 3)
  • High level of academic and professional ability: the ability to design and carry out research projects, correct communication both in writing and orally, timeliness.
  • A clear motivation and talent for participation in the programme.
  • You are able to express yourself in proficient English, both orally and in written text, as evidenced by your motivation letter and/or writing sample, and the interview that is part of the selection procedure.
