The activities covered in the design process at Industrial Design Engineering are user understanding, ideation, concept screening, visualization, rapid prototyping, overall systems design, materials, detailed design, manufacturing issues, sustainable development issues etc.

In the development projects throughout the program track from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, you will work in close collaboration with commercial businesses and organizations that have identified a business potential in developing a new product or improving an existing product. 

From an Industrial Design Engineering perspective, the development projects must include user interaction as well as technical complexity implying that knowledge in both industrial design and mechanical engineering is required. The resulting technical products should be adapted to user needs and user behavior.

As Industrial Design Engineering combines the fields of industrial design and mechanical engineering the teachers at IDE have a background in both or either of the fields. This also requires that the applying students have both industrial design courses and mechanical engineering courses in their bachelor degree.


The Industrial Design Engineering track provides the skills necessary to work with product development and design engineering, user-driven design, either as a technical expert, a project manager, or a commissioner of design and other related positions.

Degree project and thesis

In the degree project you perform in-depth work on real problem in line with the specialization you have chosen and you demonstrate your skills and competence in the area. The thesis project is supervised by an experienced researcher and can be performed in an industrial setting or in an academic environment. Each student is encouraged to actively search for a suitable thesis project and KTH will provide information, assistance and suitable points of contact.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Programme specific admission requirements

A Bachelor´s degree, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits, within Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

In addition, applicants to the Industrial Design Engineering Track must also have good knowledge in both mechanical engineering and industrial design:
  • Mechanical Engineering: Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrical engineering, Machine elements, manufacturing technology, 3D-CAD, Product development and Engineering Design
  • Industrial design: Ergonomics, the Design process, Materials, Sketching, Rapid prototyping, and Digital 3D-visualisation.

Every year a limited number of KTH Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence. Recipients of the KTH Scholarship will have their tuition fee waived for the first and the second year, provided that the study results during the first year are satisfactory.

Applications for the KTH Scholarship for studies beginning in autumn will be open December 1 - January 15.
