This involves the whole range from nanophysics to cosmic physics. Acoustics is about understanding the physical processes involved in the interaction between acoustic waves and matter, and exploiting these processes. Modern acoustics is a science under rapid development, with numerous important application areas for society and industry, such as
- medicine (diagnostics, therapy, medication),
- oceanography / marine sciences (climate monitoring, sea bottom mapping, ecosystem monitoring, communication, underwater vehicles, echo sounders, sonar, remote sensing),
- geoscience (seismology, seismics),
- biology (speech, hearing, bioacoustics),
- psychology (psychoacoustics, speech communication),
- astrophysics (vibration of celestial bodies and interstellar matter),
- petroleum (seismics, reservoar monitoring, drilling and well technology, production logging, process measurement, fiscal sales measurement of oil and gas),
- musics and audio (music instruments, music theory, audio technology, speech processing),
- building and construction (architecture, noise prevention),
- fisheries (detection and monitoring of fish, krill and plankton),
- defense technology (submarine detection, mine hunting),
- materials technology (material characterization, material testing),
- elektronics (surface waves, delay lines).
The Acoustics Group at the University of Bergen´s Department of Physics and Technology, provides education within general acoustics and acoustic methods, as well as within specific areas of acoustics / ultrasound. This includes methods and technology based on use of acoustic waves in gases, liquids and solids. The research in the group is traditionally funded in basic research, with focus towards applications e.g. in underwater acoustics, petroleum and medicine. The work involves problems in linear and non-linear acoustics. The group cooperates with other research organizations and industry within such application areas. The group participates in "The Michelsen Centre for Industrial Measurement Science and Technology" (a Centre for Research based Innovation), and "NCE Subsea" (a National Centre of Expertise).
The Physics-Acoustics programme is offered by the University of Bergen.
After completion of a Master degree in acoustics, the candidate shall have achieved good knowledge within the specialised research topic of the thesis, and be able to:
- Give an account of basic ideas and methods within acoustics.
- Work independently on a research topic within acoustics.
- Operate in a relevant scientific environment to gather necessary information and tools for conducting research within acoustics.
- Present the research topic, methods and results in a written thesis, and as an oral presentation at a seminar.
If the Master degree is completed with a grade of C or better, the candidate is qualified for PhD studies within acoustics.

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). Bachelor degree in physics. Candidates with a bachelor degree in another natural science or engineering discipline, can be accepted if the candidate´s background in physics is evaluated to be sufficient for the master project. The average grade for the bachelor study, or equivalent, is normally to be C or better.
The University of Bergen is publicly funded and offers tuition-free quality education for all students, regardless of citizenship.
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
