English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score:


    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • Proof of English language skills
  • Bachelor degree in Electrical engineering or in (Applied) Physics or an equivalent such as Materials Science to be directly admitted to the program. Students in their last year of such a programme will also be considered.
  • Applicants holding a bachelor or master degree in another field of engineering are welcome to join the programme through a personalised preparatory programme. This preparatory programme can be combined with a specific bachelor or master programme.

VUB Scholarships for European M.Sc. in Photonics

For the academic year 2018-2019 the VUB will grant several full scholarships of 10.000 EUR per year to students of this MSc. Every application will be screened on the basis of excellence and motivation.

B-PHOT Scholarships B-PHOT, Brussels Photonics Research group at VUB, offers 3 entry scholarships of 1.000 EUR are awarded at the begining of the 1st semester of th master. Three continuation scholarships of 1.500 EUR are offered at the start of the 2nd semester to the top 3 students according to their performance in the 1st semester. Finally, one excellence scholarship worth 5.000 EUR will be offered to the best performing student at the start of the 2nd MSc year.
