This Intelligent Transport Systems and Logistics programme offered by the Linköping University focuses on the integration of IT and telecommunications into transport and logistics systems, with the aim of increasing efficiency, safety, mobility and customer satisfaction while reducing environmental impact.

About

Well-designed transport and logistics systems are fundamental to individual mobility, commerce, welfare and economic growth. With ever-increasing volumes of traffic and goods, future transport systems face a huge challenge: How to balance the need for speedy, efficient and sustainable transport with the negative impacts of congestion, pollution and fatalities?

The answer lies in a tighter integration of telecommunications and information technology into vehicles and physical road infrastructure. This Intelligent Transport Systems and Logistics programme offered by the Linköping University provides the engineering and managerial skills required to design, plan, analyse and manage transport and logistics systems.

Two profiles: Traffic and Logistics

Through a multi-disciplinary approach, you will acquire the skills to adopt changes in the industrial environment in a responsible and efficient manner. The programme provides the tools required to understand, develop and control future transport and logistics systems through the use of optimisation, simulation and geographical information systems. You will study traffic and supply-chain modelling, mobile and wireless telecommunications, road safety and project management.

For the second and third semester you may choose between the Traffic profile and the Logistics profile. The final semester is dedicated to your thesis, which is usually written in close collaboration with a company, city or government body.

Frontline research

You will need strong skills in mathematics and an analytical mind: programming experience is a distinct advantage. You will carry out group-based lab practicals and project work. Many courses are continuously assessed through hand-in assignments and reports. Oral and written communication is an integral part of the programme, to prepare students for international management positions.

You will be at the frontline of Swedish transportation research. Linköping University is the coordinating university of the Swedish National Postgraduate School of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). We are also a member of ITS-EduNet, the network for Training and Education on Intelligent Transport Systems.

Career opportunities

With your engineering profile and transport systems expertise, you will have a wide choice of challenging career opportunities. Many of our alumni work as traffic engineers, employed by a city or as consultants. You may also become a logistics manager with a production company, controlling the entire logistics chain. Another option is to work for a technology company that develops traffic and transport systems, such as Ericsson, where your knowledge will be very useful. Students will also be well prepared for a research career.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score:

    575

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

    90

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in an engineering subject, or equivalent. The Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen) shall be from an internationally recognised university.
  • 22 ECTS credits in mathematics/applied mathematics and/or application of mathematics relevant for the programme, including courses in linear algebra, calculus and mathematical statistics.
  • English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (English 6/B). This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test.
