Utrecht's University Master of Arts in Intercultural Communication teaches you how to approach and promote linguistic and cultural diversity in various international contexts.The interdisciplinary and multilingual programme will equip you with the tools to apply theory to international practice.


The Master of Arts in Intercultural Communication is offered by the Utrecht University. The world is becoming an ever ‘smaller place’. We are increasingly brought into contact with different languages and cultures. Through multicultural societies, international organisations and online connections. Communication has become an international – and therefore an intercultural –matter. The importance of understanding cultural parameters and mutual perceptions is rapidly increasing in fields such as business, education, conflict resolution, and more.

After graduation, your skills as a multilingual and intercultural expert will contribute to mutual understanding within Europe or abroad and to the strong worldwide relationships that are so important in our era of globalisation.

International And Interdiscplinary

Over the course of one year, this Master’s programme will prepare you for an international career. You will learn to analyse communication products and processes in the multilingual contexts of international organisations. Through rigorous interdisciplinary methods, you will gain experience in communication from linguistic, communicative, cultural, anthropological and management perspectives. 


The Master’s programme in Intercultural Communication is a joint programme that incorporates expertise from German, English, French, Italian, Dutch and Spanish researchers and lecturers. You can choose your own study path in the form of a language-specific programme that includes a high level of second/international language training in one of the language mentioned above. Alternatively, you can pursue a non-language-specific multilingual programme, in which you analyse communication processes within different languages and cultures. All tracks are open to international students who want to increase their intercultural and multilingual competencies in an international context.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:


    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Besides TOEFL, IELTS and CAE, also Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE - at least Grade C) is accepted as a proof of English Proficiency.

You have a Bachelor's degree from a Dutch university (or an international equivalent) and have the following competencies:

  • You are able to recognize and implement interdisciplinary approaches in the field of intercultural communication. This is demonstrated by at least 15 EC language and communication science courses at an advanced Bachelor's level and 15 EC culture studies courses at an advanced Bachelor's level.
  • You have basic knowledge of and insight of administration, management and organization, evident from at least 7.5 EC coursework.
  • You have knowledge of the methods and techniques employed in the interdisciplinary research of intercultural communication, evident from at least 7.5 EC coursework.
  • If you opt for a language-specific track, you must have studied the language and culture of that specific language. This is demonstrated by at least 30 EC in your bachelor’s major.
  • You are able to express yourself in proficient English, both orally and in written text, as evidenced by your motivation letter and/or writing sample, and the interview that is part of the selection procedure.
