The second-cycle degree in International Horticultural Science  (IMaHS) is a 2-year post-graduate programme offered by the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Bologna and the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bozen. At the end of the studies the international programme releases a joint degree recognized by both institutions.


The International Horticultural Science (IMaHS) programme at the University of Bologna aims to prepare future Agriculture technicians with high skills and capable of work in the horticultural sector in a global and international context. Students will experience multidisciplinary training and research-led teaching in subjects covering the main aspects of horticultural production and the supply chain with particular attention to the environmental sustainability and social and economic protection (People-Planet Profit).

The programme will benefit from the collaboration with the horticultural industry. Students will have the opportunity to spend up to two semesters in one of the European partner universities and be entitled to earn a double degree.

Career prospects 

The international degree programme IMAHS has been designed for highly motivated students and aims to form international-level professionals that will be qualified for designing, managing and assuring the quality of agricultural business along the whole production chain. The final aim is to allow future professionals to increase the sustainability of the production chain, from the environmental preservation and protection to the social and economical aspects (People-Planet-Profit). 

Graduates may apply for positions in the management of the food production or transformation chain, in the organization of control systems and quality certification (traceability, system-, process- and product quality, hygienic assessment) of horticultural produce, in the organization of activities and projects linked to public intervention in horticulture, and in research and development for the improvement of technology and production.

    The International Horticultural Science (IMaHS) programme at the University of Bologna is addressed to graduates in Agriculture, Forestry, Environmental Science and Biotechnologies and other subjects related to the study area in Life Sciences.       The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     Academic Requirements

    In order to successfully attend the Second-Cycle Degree in International Horticultural Science, prospective applicants should be in possess of basic knowledge about technological aspects related to vegetable crops and fruit tree production, genetics and biology, plant protection and mechanical engineering. 

    In addition, the fundamentals of agricultural economics, mathematics and statistics are suggested competences.

    • Bachelor of Science consisting in at least 180 ECTS in the Life Science study area
