The Human Geography programme offered by Stockholm University aims deepening and broadening the students knowledge of different fields in Geography. Purpose and learning objectives

Through the Human Geography programme offered at Stockholm University you will obtain – broad knowledge and specialized knowledge in different fields of Human Geography – thorough knowledge in methods required to assess others’ work and pursue own studies – skills to do research work – skills to discuss, communicate and present others’ and your own research results.

The programme leads to a Master’s degree in Human Geography. Through this programme you will develop your skills and competence to do research work, to assess research work and to communicate research work. In parallel you will obtain broad and specialized knowledge in the wide field of Human Geography.

This combination of skills and knowledge qualifies the holder to participate in research and development work and to do advanced applied work.

Programme Structure

Compulsory courses: Space and Society – Theory and Method in Human Geography, 15 credits, Advanced Method in Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning, 15 credits, Master’s Thesis in Human Geography, 30 credits.

The contents of the programme can be designed according to your interest. Specializations in landscape studies, population geography, migration, economic geography and urban processes are possible.

Our courses provide you with the knowledge and skills to work with a range of different tasks such as housing, economic growth, heritage management, land use, environmental problems, urban and regional planning, social and ethnic segregation, urban and regional development, transport and tourism. Human Geography provides you with an education in the social sciences for work on investigations, analysis, planning and communication. Such jobs may deal with local, national or international questions and relations.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • A requirement for all Master's programmes is the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, corresponding to at least 180 credits in the European Credit Transfer System.
  • In order to document your eligibility, you must provide University Admissions in Sweden with copies of your previous study information, as well as document your English proficiency. 
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 90 ECTS credits in Human Geography, Geography, Urban and Regional planning or equivalent. English B/English 6 (Swedish Upper Secondary School course) or equivalent.
