Ecotoxicology is concerned with the environmental impact of these substances. It aims at characterizing, understanding and finally predicting the effects of toxic chemicals on plant and animal populations, ecological communities and whole ecosystems. As such, Ecotoxicology is the scientific basis for environmental frameworks such as for example the REACH regulation, the Water Framework Directive or the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
As an interdisciplinary science Ecotoxicology has strong connections to Biology, Ecology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, Statistics and Social Sciences. Therefore the Ecotoxicology Programme is run as a collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
The Ecotoxicology Master's programme is offered at University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science. Roughly 70 new chemicals are described every hour, and modern society uses more than 100 000 of those for different purposes, for example as pesticides, pharmaceuticals or laundry agents.
The programme first provides an overview of Ecotoxicology as a scientific discipline and then you will apply this knowledge in laboratory courses and finally in individual master projects. We will put equal emphasis on theory and practice. The aim is to obtain skills that are necessary for identifying ecotoxicological problems, recognizing essential knowledge gaps and developing appropriate problem-solving strategies.
The programme is aimed at students with an interest in environmental sciences that have a basic competence in biology, chemistry or related fields. The programme leads to a Master of Science degree. Successful participants will have the necessary skills to work either with regulatory authorities, environmental consultants or in chemical industry. It also opens up the possibility to further pursue an international academic career in the field, for example as a PhD student.
Besides providing an education in Ecotoxicology per se, the Master's Programme provides tools for self-study towards a set goal - in a team with supervisors and peers. It teaches on how you can communicate within a scientific and public context. Many of the courses use problem-based learning approaches in small groups and ample time will always be given for discussions, exchange of knowledge, and critical reviews.
The master programme is structured in three main parts:
You can apply until:
Always verify the dates on the programme website.
You only need to take one of these language tests:
Minimum required score:
The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.Book IELTS
Minimum required score:
The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).
Minimum required score:
The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

We are convinced that education and research flourish in an international environment. A mixture of students from different cultures enriches the learning environment and the University believes that motivated students should have a chance to study here even if they don’t have the means to cover all costs.
StudyPortals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
