This Master in International Biometrics is a two-years program corresponding to the fifth year of university studies. The content of this program deals with main techniques used to extract and process digitally, human body characteristics, including physical and behavioural features. Moreover, this Master allows students to acquire important skills through some key lectures, such as: Person Identification, verification, face recognition, fingerprint, palm-print, iris recognition, gesture analysis, motion analysis, image and video processing, feature extraction, face and body detection, behavioural biometrics, evaluation of biometric systems, computer vision, virtual and augmented reality, advanced software programming, etc.

The International Master Program of Biometrics can be achieved either On-Campus at UPEC or Online. In case or Online classes, specific E-learning platforms are used. Taking classes On-campus or on Online leads exactly the to same Degrees. Even exams can be arranged online.

What will you be able to do after your graduation?

Once graduated, students can join companies as project manager, technical consultant, software system analyst, biometric systems engineer, software application developer, computer vision system designer, etc. You can also apply for for PhD positions at any university in France, in Europe or even in the world.

Programme Structure

MASTER 1

The Master 1 is organised according to two semesters (one academic year). The first semester requires 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System). It starts around the end of September and ends at the beginning of February. On the other hand, the second semester (30 ECTS) starts in February until the end of June. Essentially, the purpose of these two semesters is to provide to students major basis in terms or data processing, analysis and visualization (signal and image processing) and programming techniques (Object oriented programming for smart systems). Moreover, basis of general-purpose biometrics will be presented. In parallel with class sessions, students deal with interesting projects.

1st Semester
  • Measurements and data processing

The purpose of this class is to learn how to deal with signal measurement and image capture, representation, analysis and processing. Only basic methods will be considered. During the labs, Matlab sofware will be considered.

  • Software integration I

Object oriented programming will be considered. At the end of this class, students should be confortable in programming. Integration aspects will be introduced.

  • Measurements and data processing

The purpose of this class is to learn how to deal with signal measurement and image capture, representation, analysis and processing. Only basic methods will be considered. During the labs, Matlab sofware will be considered.

  • Software integration I

Object oriented programming will be considered. At the end of this class, students should be confortable in programming. Integration aspects will be introduced.

  • Pattern recognition

This course is a set of useful image processing classes. Presented approaches can be used for pattern recognition systems. For labs sessions, Matlab software will considered.

  • Biosciences

In this course, DNA analysis will be considered, since DNA can be regarded as a biometric modality.

  • English-French

Some french classes are proposed to english speakers. On the other hand, advanced technical english courses are proposed to french speakers.

2nd Semester
  • Introduction to biometrics

This course introduce biometrics from different point of views (e.g. modalities, identification/verification, evaluation), system design, etc).

  • Software integration II

This course is complementary to Software integration I. At the end of the classes, students should be able to create a simple application by integrating useful image processing libraries.

  • Computer vision and image synthesis

Basis of computer vision techniques will be presented in this course. Specifically, students will be using OpenCV and some other equivalent platforms.

  • Business and management techniques

This class is useful for students interested in creating their own company. Business and management techniques will be presented.

  • Ethics and Privacy

When dealing with biometrics, it is very important to deal with ethics and privacy aspects. Discussion and debates around these subjects will be considered.

  • Projects
Students start their Biometric projects either for research or industry objectives. They can deal with the same subject

MASTER 2

1st Semester

  • Advanced biometrics

In this course some advanced biometric techniques will be presented. Specifically, we will consider: iris recognition algorithms, speech recognition, behavioral biometrics, evaluation of biometric systems, anti-spoofing techniques, etc. The course includes, talks, lectures and labs.

  • Advanced programming

The purpose of this course is to deal with smartphone applications design. Specifically, IPhone/IPad programming will be considered. Integration of biometrics applications will be discussed (e.g. face recognition,...). This course includes lectures and labs.

  • Computer vision and Computer graphics

Advanced computer vision techniques and fundamental of computer graphics will be considered. Specifically, it concerns stereo-vision data processing, 3D object visualization, processing and software integration. In this course, talks, lectures and labs will be delivered.

  • Virtual and augmented reality

From theory to practice, students will learn the state of the art related to both virtual reality and augmented reality. Through numerous labs, they will be able at the end of the course to develop and design their own applications.

  • Smart systems

In this course we will develop basically the Radio-frequency identification (RFID) that may be connected to biometric systems. More specifically, it will be considered: RFID technology, RFID equipment and systems, Standards and norms, RFID deployment, business cases.

  • Smart biometric applications

This is a general-purpose course that includes many talks related to biometrics environment including its application in different fields (e.g. medical, sport, transportation…). Some talks are related socio-economics matter, including business, marketing and project management.

  • Research and professional culture

In this course, students wil learn how to write research papers and how to publish their work in high impact conferences and journals. For students having professional objectives, they will attend classes provided by professionals in order to deal with the industry matters.

  • Project

Students are asked to work on small projects related to biometrics. It may be research projects or application projects. Projects subjects can be related to the internship. At the end of the semester, students should provide a report, show a demo and defend their work.

2nd Semester (Internship)

During the second semester, you have to achieve "any where in the world", a 5 or 6 months internship in a company or a research laboratory. The keywords below may be helpful in order to identify your internship.

Master 1

At least a Bachelor degree "3 years of university studies" in the field of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent. For french education system a "Licence 3" is required (e.g. SPI, Informatique,...).

Master 2

At least a Bachelor degree "4 years of university studies" in the field of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent. For french education system a "Master 1" is required (e.g. SPI, Informatics,...), or equivalent. Basis of signal/image processing are required.
