The Master’s program in economics provides a strong background in theory and technical skills for work as an economist in government or industry. For the undecided student, the Master’s level of study allows the opportunity to determine whether one has the interest and skill to subsequently pursue a PhD degree.


The Master’s program is flexible and offers several options. The student may select courses in a variety of fields for a broad exposure to contemporary economic problems. The student may also limit course selections to one or two fields and acquire a high degree of competence in a limited number of areas. Applicants to the program must complete, or have previously completed, course work that satisfies the MS Economics prerequisite courses listed on the 


The University of Wyoming has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission continuously since 1923. Following the completion of its self-study, the University hosted its last Higher Learning Commission site review team and received continued accreditation in 2009-2010. The University’s next scheduled comprehensive review from the Higher Learning Commission will be in 2019-2020.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Minimum test requirements:

  • 310 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for PhD applicants
  • 300 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for MS program applicants
  • International applicants -- 540 paper based TOEFL; 207 computerized TOEFL; 76 Internet-based TOEFL; We will also accept official IELTS scores. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for full admission.
    • We waive the IETLS or TOEFL only if, by the time you would start our program, you will have a degree from an English-speaking university and will have lived in an English-speaking country for at least two years. We do not accept certificates from English as a Second Language programs as alternatives to the TOEFL or IELTS, because it is very difficult for us to gauge the quality of such programs. We view completion of such a program as preparation for the TOEFL or IELTS, not as a replacement.
  • Note: The above are minimum requirements; meeting them does not guarantee admission or funding.
  • Fees: All students must pay an admissions processing fee of $50 through the Admissions Office.
