The strong theoretical basis of the Computer Science - Software and Data Engineering program at Charles University gives our graduates a competitive advantage in a dynamically evolving world where today’s technologies are often obsolete tomorrow.

Studies usually take two years and finish with a state final exam and Master’s thesis defense. After successful completion the student is awarded the title of a Master of Science.

The study branch Software and data engineering aims at expertise in analysis, design and development of complex software solutions, and systems focused on big data processing. The portfolio of courses provided in the study covers a number of technological platforms, from classic, web-based, to modern cloud and distributed solutions. A required part of the study is a work on large software project where students apply not only the theoretical knowledge and technological skills but also team work abilities.

The graduate gains a deep knowledge of software and data engineering based on her/his specialization. With the specialization Software engineering the graduate is able to analyse requirements for software solutions, to design architectures, and to lead the development process. The specialization Software development prepares the graduate for leading a team of SW developers. The development of internet applications is covered by the specialization Web engineering. The graduate of Database systems is able to design schemas of databases and to implement complex database applications. With the Big data processing specialization the graduate is prepared for the role of data scientist with abilities in data mining and related data analytics knowledge.

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

  • Minimum required score:

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score:

    80

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

To apply for a Master’s program delivered in English you must

  • hold or be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s diploma and provide a certified copy thereof; in cases required by law, a certification of equivalence of education must accompany the application,
  • have sufficient academic background in the relevant fields 
  • have sufficient command of the English language; this can be demonstrated by providing your results in one of the standardized English tests that we recognize (see below for details).
