University rank #5 (ARWU) , CA,
The Human Development and Education (HDE) program prepares students to investigate children’s learning and development as these occurs within the contexts of schooling and the family. Our faculty and students typically explore these phenomena through the application of psychological theory, and we ultimately seek to contribute to the fields of education and psychology.

Faculty members in HDE are engaged in teaching and research in a variety of developmental domains. Much of our work focuses on children’s social and cultural cognition, moral judgment, language, literacy, psychosocial development, and acquisition of mathematical and scientific concepts. Faculty members are interested in exploring these issues within early childhood education settings, schools, and families. We are particularly interested in understanding processes of learning and development of children and adolescents from a wide array of backgrounds and ability levels, both within and outside the United States.

As a department we are also committed to supporting effective teaching and parenting practices. For instance, a number of our faculty members develop and evaluate teacher preparation programs at the pre-service and in-service levels.

The majority of our graduates become faculty members in colleges and universities. Others hold positions in contract research firms or government agencies related to child welfare and education at the local, state or national level. Still others work with local educational authorities and social service agencies.

Programme Structure

Students become skilled researchers by working on projects with individual faculty members and by attending research seminars organized around topics of current interest to faculty and students. In addition to these informal learning experiences, students take coursework in human development and education, including advanced classes in social development, cognitive development, and the processes of learning and instruction. Rigorous preparation in statistics, research design, qualitative methods, and measurement is also afforded by the doctoral course requirements. A final strand of our doctoral preparation consists of developing three extensive pre-qualifying papers in preparation for the qualifying examination and dissertation experience.
