The International Master of "Physical Activity and Health" will provide graduate students with insight, knowledge, and experience in ways of promoting health through physical activity and exercise for the prevention and rehabilitation of diseases.

In small classes, the two-year programme emphasises how to conceptualise, implement, and evaluate intervention strategies for the promotion of physical activity. Through active participation, students gain knowledge and experience by:

  • Conceptualising intervention strategies for the promotion of physical activity and public health policies.
  • Implementing physical activity and health promotion measures within specific settings e.g., companies and schools, and for specific target groups like immigrants and older people.
  • Developing and implementing measures for individual physical activity and health promotion programmes for specific people who are prone to certain diseases and health risks e.g., back pain, osteoporosis.
  • Quality assurance and management of specific physical activity and health promotion measures.
  • Scientific evaluation of specific physical activity and health promotion programmes.

Currently, more than 50 students from 30+ nations are enrolled in our programme. Our students have degrees from various disciplines such as Sport Science, Physical Education, Medicine and Surgery, Public Health, Psychology, Physiotherapie, Sociology, or Communication. They value the diverse cultural and interdisciplinary backgrounds of our students.


Officially accredited/recognized by the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Bildung und Kultus, Wissenschaft und Kunst (English: Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and Art), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is a very large (enrollment range: 30,000-34,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

The international MA "Physical Activity and Health" programme is open for students with a college or university degree (BA as a minimum requirement).

Minimum requirement for overall grade

The overall score in the transcript has to be equivalant to at least 80% of total available points, indicating a minimum grade of "good" or "very good", depending on the universities grading system.

Degrees from the following programmes will be accepted:

A primarily health or physical activity focused programme (e.g., Diploma, Master or Bachelor in Sports Science, Medicine, Health Sciences, Physiotherapy) from a German or foreign university or college.

Another programme (e.g., Diplom, Master or Bachelor in Psychology, Pedagogy and Sociology) with a focus on health or physical activity from a German or foreign university or college, or other comparable degrees.

Degress from the following programmes will NOT be accepted without additional qualifications:

Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Biology, Business Administrtion

Living Costs

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.


FAU supports its top students as part of the Germany Scholarship (Deutschlandstipendium) programme. Each semester, scholarships of 3,600 euros for one year are awarded to the most gifted students. The unique feature of this scholarship is that half of the money comes from companies, donors, friends of the university and alumni, while the other half is provided by the German Federal State.Students at FAU can apply for a Germany Scholarship once a year. Funding amounts to 300 euros per month and is initially granted for two semesters (the winter semester and the subsequent summer semester) which can be extended annually (from the next winter semester) until the end of the standard duration of the degree programme. Students must apply again to receive an extension.
