The goal of the Industrial Design master’s program from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is to support you in becoming a self-directed industrial design engineer with a unique competency profile. This profile combines specific attitude, skills and knowledge from five areas of expertise: creativity and aesthetics;technology and realization; user and society; business and entrepreneurship; and math, data and computing. 

On top of a solid base in all areas, you can develop your individual profile by specializing in two areas throughout the master. 

Professional perspective

As a graduate of the Master’s degree program in Industrial Design, you will have a proactive and multifaceted background in technology covering user research and design as well as technology itself. As a true team player you will be able to respond optimally to issues arising from both industry and the community at large.


This program is officially recognized and accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO).

Programme Structure

Specialization tracks

  • The ‘Research, Design and Development’ track supports you in developing the attitude, skills and knowledge you need to work successfully in the R&D or design department of a corporation or public institution. 
  • The ‘Design Leadership and Entrepreneurship’ track is for future professional design managers and design entrepreneurs. This track focuses explicitly on the rapidly growing creative industries sector where creativity and innovation play a central role.
  • The ‘Constructive Design Research’ track supports you in developing the mentality, skills and expertise you need to contribute to the design and research community’s knowledge about how design interacts with research.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Students with a Dutch degree (hbo or wo)
  • You have direct access to the TU/e-master’s program Industrial Design after completing the TU/e bachelor's program Industrial Design. This also goes for a bachelor's degree Industrial Design of Delft University of Technology or Industrial Design or Creative Technology of University of Twente. 

Do you have a relevant, Dutch bachelor's degree that doesn’t grant direct admission to the Industrial Design master? In that case: first apply for a pre-master's program via Studielink.

Students with a foreign degree
  • After filling out the online application form, you send your portfolio straight to the Departmental Admissions Board of Industrial Design (FTC).
