This Masters has previously been taught as a Doctoral programme which was awarded the Mención de Calidad (certificate of high quality) for the academic year 2003-4. Colloid and interface science forms a part of various disciplines, with its main historic connection being to physical chemistry, but it is also linked to the physics of condensed matter and most specifically complex fluids.


The Master’s Degree in Science and Technology of Colloids and Interfaces is a joint degree between the University of Valencia, University of Granada, University of Salamanca, University of Barcelona, Complutense University of Madrid, Pablo de Olavide University, University of Almeria, University of Malaga, University of Santiago de Compostela, University of Sevilla and University of Vigo, according to the corresponding agreement in which the mutual responsibilities are established.

Recently, however, due to applications of different systems, colloids has developed into a distinct area, and is currently one of the most prolific areas of teaching and research within such apparently diverse disciplines as physical chemistry, biochemistry and materials engineering.

As an example, soaps, detergents, dyes and paints are all colloidal systems, however their particular structure and properties means that they are used not only in everyday life, but also in technological processes such as separations, the synthesis of nanoparticles and polymers, technology for hydrocarbon recovery, etc.

During the Masters the student will acquire a solid appreciation of the scientific fundamentals of colloidal systems, as well as the techniques of production, characterisation and manipulation of these systems, which will be reinforced by internal and external practices in R&D centres.
