Paris-Sud University maintains a close relationship with leading research organizations as well as the French Grandes Ecoles and is also a founding member of the new Paris-Saclay University.

The University of Paris-Sud 11 was founded when the centres at Orsay, Châtenay-Malabry, Sceaux, Cachan and Kremlin-Bicêtre were merged.

The Orsay campus began to expand on the Moulon plateau and new laboratories were built. Almost all of these were part of Paris-Sud University, although a few were more specifically linked to CNRS or even the University of Paris VI.


Paris-Sud University is renowned not only for its research but also for the extent and variety of its courses and programmes, both in academic disciplines at Bachelor, Master’s, and PhD levels, and in technical training. Multidisciplinary curricula with teaching supported by cutting-edge research combine with innovative teaching to accommodate a wide variety of students from newcomers in their first year to those undertaking lifelong learning. Programmes focus on the needs of society and, even at doctoral level, on training students to enter the job market.


Paris-Sud is particularly recognized for the high level of its basic research, most notably in mathematics and physics. In Health Sciences, its research has had rich and fruitful results in therapeutic innovation in a large number of medical fields. Its Law, Economics and Management teams carry out highly original research in fields such as new technologies and innovation. Finally, a large number of interdisciplinary research projects are also being carried out in fields such as sport and human motricity, for example.

Student services

The study centre is a University department which welcomes students and provides assistance and direction throughout their studies and life as a student, until they eventually enter the world of work.

Housing services

The University halls of residence are managed by CROUS (the Regional Student Welfare Office).Rooms are available for 9, 10 or 12 months and are allocated according to students' personal circumstances.

All the University halls of residence are situated close to the university so that students don’t have to travel too far. Single rooms are about 10 m2 in area. Each room contains a bed, a desk and a wardrobe. CROUS also provides sheets and blankets. Halls of residence are usually close to a university restaurant (which is even open in the evenings) and a library.

Bathrooms, toilets and kitchens are shared with other students living on the same floor. Rooms with private bathrooms are also available for couples.

Student Life

Campus life

Paris-Sud University is the largest campus in France. Its exceptional setting and unique environment include a listed botanical garden featuring a collection of rare species. Funded by the Paris-Sud University Foundation (Fondation Paris-Sud Université) to mark the University's 40th anniversary in 2011, the "Green University" project underscores Paris-Sud's commitment to long-term investment in the environment.

Sports facilities

Thanks to the SUAPS – the University's Sports Activities organisation - and various student sports clubs, there are over 40 different sports activities on offer at Paris-Sud University.

A large number of attractive sports facilities are at your disposal on each university campus: a university swimming pool, a horse-riding centre, 2 professional dance studios, tennis courts, a 300m2 dojo, 2 gyms with the latest weightlifting equipment, many sports halls, and outdoor sports grounds.

The sports activities you choose can form part of your course or you can simply choose to do sport in your free time. Various tournaments, competitions, courses, outings and trips away are also organized throughout the year.

Student clubs

Are you keen on discussions and getting out and about? The student clubs are there for you. There are also course-based and even Master's-based clubs which arrange outings and parties.

Student life is very rewarding at Paris-Sud: over sixty clubs, including twenty-seven which belong to FAPS (the Federation of Paris-Sud Clubs). All the student clubs are listed on our website and in the French-language student guide.
