About

History

Originally a small, independent teachers’ college, Santa Barbara joined the renowned University of California system in 1944 and has since grown to be an integral and important part of public postsecondary education in the state.

Education

More than 200 majors, degrees, and credentials are offered through UCSB’s five schools and the Graduate Division. The College of Letters and Science alone offers 80 majors. The College of Creative Studies offers talented students an alternative approach for pursuing advanced, independent work in the arts, mathematics, or the sciences. The College of Engineering offers degree programs in seven disciplines.

The university also has two professional schools: the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.

Research

Pioneering research is a critical component of the highest quality education. UCSB’s faculty includes six Nobel Prize winners and scores of elected members of national and international academies and societies as well as dozens of winners of Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships. The campus is one of only 62 research-intensive institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities.

Student services

The mission of the Division of Student Affairs is to anticipate, plan for, and respond to the needs of a diverse and changing student body by providing services and programs that promote physical and emotional well-being and foster intellectual and personal development. Divisional efforts to meet student needs are intended to create a supportive and challenging learning environment and a sense of community essential to advancing the University's goals of excellence in education, research and public service.

Housing services

UCSB Housing & Residential Sevices provides housing and associated residential life services for UCSB's undergraduate student, graduate student and faculty population. While the majority of functions at UCSB operate during the traditional “40-hour” workweek, H&RS operates on a 24-hour daily basis throughout the year. The scope of the services offered can be compared to those of operating a small city.

Library services

UC Santa Barbara Library enables exploration and collaboration for scholars in their intellectual engagement with the world of ideas and the creation of knowledge.

ICT services

Technology Services (ETS) contributes to UC Santa Barbara's mission of research, teaching, and community service by:

  • serving as a resource and catalyst in partnering with the campus community to efficiently deliver IT infrastructure
  • increasing the value and effectiveness of campus IT investments and implementations.
