Liverpool John Moores University has come a long way from its origin as a Mechanics Institute back in 1823. Now one of the largest institutions in the UK, we have firmly established our place in the world as a modern civic university with a vibrant, innovative community of staff and students. We are proud of our status within the city of Liverpool.
All undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes are delivered by academics involved in innovative research and consultancy. This combination of academic expertise and ‘real world’ experience helps ensure that all degrees are kept up-to-date and secure accreditation by key professional bodies.
The University has been awarded 9 National Teaching Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy in recognition of its outstanding teaching and learner support.
The range of research in the University is considerable. From developing cutting edge new technology to detecting brain tumours to ground-breaking studies on the impact of the recession in UK and European cities, the University’s researchers are helping to inform public policy, shape new laws, transform lives and improve the environment.
We are now ranked in the Research Quality Ranking, with 96% of research activity rated international quality or better.
The University’s World of Work Programme has been developed in partnership with FTSE 100 companies and leading business organisations. The programme ensures that all undergraduates develop the experience, attributes and skills demanded by today’s employers in all sectors of the economy. The British Council regards the World of Work Programme as a ‘best practice’ approach to employability.

As a new student at LJMU you are guaranteed accommodation right in the heart of the dynamic city centre, with easy access to the main University campuses. Liverpool is one of the most affordable, culturally innovative and safe student cities in the UK.
All full-time International students request accommodation through the same process as UK students, and each year LJMU sets aside rooms for new postgraduate and mature students too. The accommodation we offer is in ‘Halls’ – large blocks of flats designed to meet the needs of modern student life.
We make your accommodation options as tailored to your needs as possible and have a dedicated accommodation office to support you applying for accommodation.
There are two city-centre based Libraries which are open 24/7 during the semester periods. The libraries are located close to where you will be studying and have their own collections both print and electronic specific to the academic needs of the Faculties and students it supports.
Computers are available in our 2 city centre libraries 24/7 during term time, facilities are also available around campus close to your lecture and tutorial rooms for convenience. Both libraries provide a laptop loan system for students to borrow laptops to use at home providing computer access whenever a student requires.
Your wellbeing is important to us, which is why we offer all of our students:
We have three campuses and 44 buildings. We also have big plans for the future.
We’re very proud of our campuses. Not only because they provide a modern and inspiring learning space for all of our students, but also because they’re a place people really want to be.
The University has invested over £160 million over the past 10 years in new capital projects and modernizing existing buildings and facilities.
Facilities are designed to replicate ‘world of work’ environments and include science, technology and engineering laboratories, broadcast quality TV and radio studios, a forensic scene-of-crime lab, ship simulators, theatre and rehearsal facilities, a mock courtroom, clinical practice suites and art galleries.
All students have free access to sports facilities across Liverpool, including top-of-the-range gym equipment and fitness suites, tennis, squash and badminton courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and two golf courses.
There is a huge range of academic, social, charitable, political and cultural clubs and societies you can join. If you can't find one that meets your interests, you can set up your own society or club – you'll be surprised how many others share your enthusiasm.
From Aikido to trampolining, there's also a huge range of sports to get involved in at Liverpool John Moores University.
You might be an elite sporting champion. You may never have thrown a rugby ball in your life. Either way it doesn't matter because wherever you sit on the sporting spectrum there is a sports group that matches your ambitions and abilities.
