The University of Macau (UM) was founded in 1981. Its predecessor was the private University of East Asia. Through thirty years of development, UM has become a leading university and also the only public comprehensive university in Macao. Ever since its founding, UM has nurtured over ten thousand outstanding graduates for society.
In many parts of the world all leading universities have one thing in common: providing the best undergraduate education for local elites. As the generally recognized best university in Macao, the University of Macau (UM) must also fulfill this mission. To this end, UM will focus efforts on providing quality undergraduate education, including implementing a comprehensive range of reforms, optimizing undergraduate programmes, incorporating global perspective into all undergraduate programmes, increasing general-knowledge-related courses, launching undergraduate research programmes, and setting up Honours College.
Since the establishment of the Research Committee in 1993, the University of Macau (UM) has been developing in the areas of research. Published in hundreds of international refereed journals, the research achievements of UM in various scientific and technological domains have reached international level, producing world-class, award-winning papers.
The Postgraduate Houses provide accommodation for master's and PhD students. The area has a small indoor sports venue, an activity room, and offices for dormitory management personnel and student counselling personnel. The design of the buildings in this area is in harmony with the architectural style of the campus, while at the same time aims to convey the liveliness and diversity of student life.
With over thirty years of development, the WYS Library has become the largest library in Macau. At this moment, the Library holds a collection of over 5 million pieces/items, which includes about 600,000 books, 6,000 titles of periodicals, 24,000 rare books, 12,000 items of AV materials, 1,000 paintings/antiques, 3,000 items of special collections and 7,000 rolls of microfilms.
To align with the "quality undergraduate education" strategy, UM will organize colorful extracurricular activities to let students show their talents to the fullest extent. Every year UM students will have various opportunities to participate in major competitions at the international or regional level. Such activities will not only broaden students' horizon and let them learn more about the world beyond Macao but will also improve their leadership abilities, team spirit and a sense of social responsibility.
The campus has various large-scale sports facilities, including the UM Sports Complex with an indoor swimming pool, an athletic field, and outdoor sports facilities. The five-storey UM Sports Complex has a total net floor area of approximately 9,600 square metres. It can be used for large-scale events and performances.
