The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the nation’s first state university to open its doors and the only public university to award degrees in the 18th century. Authorized by the N.C. Constitution in 1776, the University was chartered by the N.C. General Assembly Dec. 11, 1789, the same year George Washington first was inaugurated as president.

Carolina researchers seeking to master and make use of technology-enabled research techniques have a new partner in the UNC Library Research Hub.The Research Hub can connect scholars at UNC with expertise, tools, and training to propel research in new directions. Areas of specialization include geographic information systems and data (GIS), statistics, visualization, and digital humanities.Research Hub Centers are located in Davis Library, the Kenan Science Library, and the Health Sciences Library. General computing systems include 800+ Intel-based computers plus about 50 Macintosh systems. The department’s most powerful system is the Biomedical Analysis and Simulation Supercomputer (BASS, pronounced like base), which consists of 452 CPUs tightly coupled to each other and to 180 GPU Computing Processors that function as image and geometry calculation accelerators.
UNC Health Care is a not-for-profit integrated health care system owned by the state of North Carolina and based in Chapel Hill. Originally established Nov. 1, 1998, by N.C.G.S. 116-37, UNC Health Care currently comprises UNC Hospitals and its provider network, the clinical programs of the UNC School of Medicine, and eight affiliate hospitals and hospital systems across the state.
The Campus Y is devoted to its mission: the pursuit of social justice through the cultivation of pluralism. To mark the Y’s 150th anniversary in 2010, an advisory board was re-established, made up of key university and community stakeholders. Its task: to work with staff and student leaders in a year-long strategic planning exercise, to help the Y build on its rich social justice legacy at the same time as answering Chancellor Holden Thorp’s call to innovate for social good.
