Semmelweis University’s history started in 1769,Not long after, the university moved to Budapest and, once the university settled in its permanent location, a period of great development commenced. The number of departments and clinical beds grew – so much so, in fact, that by 1838 congestion had become so great, that even the Hungarian National Assembly addressed the Medical Faculty’s situation.
The “Modern Medical Technologies at Semmelweis University” project yielded outstanding results in four main areas, ensuring our institution a place among the leading research universities:
The Semmelweis University Career Centre was brought into being by the University Senate in 2006, with the intent of providing professional assistance to students during and after their university years. The Office’s staff members perform a diverse range of tasks and activities, primarily assisting current and former students through career consultations, trainings, and career fairs. A “Career Development in Health Care” course – unique in Hungarian health care – has been launched under the management of the Career Centre, which promotes the creation of further development paths at the University.
Semmelweis University’s Central Library - together with its library units - constitutes one of the largest and most modern medical special collections in Hungary. The Library is currently available in two locations: the Basic Medical Science Centre Branch and the Central Branch located at Mikszáth Kálmán tér 5.
The Student Centre - The Centre is equipped with 50 computers, which provide students with free access to the internet through the University’s internal network. A scanner is also available for use, free of charge. Students can keep their valuables safe using the lockers provided by the Students’ Union.
Health and Safety
Semmelweis University offers a wide range of sporting opportunities for students. Physical education classes are compulsory at most faculties during the first four semesters. The various training sessions (water polo, volleyball, basketball, handball) and optional sports activities (judo, aerobics, etc.) further add to the variety of options.
