The University of Prince Edward Island has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence dating back to the early 19th century, with roots in its founding institutions, Prince of Wales College (PWC) and St. Dunstan’s University (SDU).In 1969, the University of Prince Edward Island welcomed its first students, following the amalgamation of Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan's University.

The University Library provides a major research base for the Province of Prince Edward Island. Constructed in the mid 1970s, the Robertson Library is evolving with the rapidly developing information technologies and the changing concept of information.
The purpose of UPEI’s Healthy Campus initiative and the work of the Healthy Campus Committee is to build capacity within the University of PEI to apply an integrated, comprehensive and employee-centered workplace health model.
The Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre at UPEI houses a walking track, squash courts, a full-size gym, and a fully-equipped fitness centre. The Centre is also connected to MacLauchlan Arena's two official-size rinks and the CARI Aquatic Centre.
