Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a public university located in Fort Myers, Florida, United States, part of unincorporated Lee County. The university belongs to the 12-campus State University System of Florida.



The history of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a visionary one built on support for providing higher education opportunities in Southwest Florida. Area citizens began the initiative to bring a state university to this part of Florida, and their early requests were quickly supported by elected officials at the local and state levels.


Florida Gulf Coast University, a comprehensive institution of higher education, offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs of strategic importance to Southwest Florida and beyond. FGCU seeks academic excellence in the development of selected programs and centers of distinction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, health professions, business, and marine and environmental sciences. FGCU emphasizes innovative, student-centered teaching and learning, promotes and practices environmental sustainability, embraces diversity, nurtures community partnerships,  and cultivates habits of lifelong learning and the discovery of new knowledge.

Student services

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal services to and represents Florida Gulf Coast University, its Board of Trustees, the Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation, Inc., and the Florida Gulf Coast University Financing Corporation. We support the mission of the University by handling all legal matters generated by the activities of these entities and by initiating legal action to forestall problems and manage risks. We educate our clients regarding the legal implications of policy and operational decisions, solve legal problems, and facilitate transactions in accordance with the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

Housing services

Adaptive Services provides the following accommodations and services. This list is not inclusive and other accommodations and services can be provided according to individual need.

  • Extended time on tests (Standard: Time and ½)
  • Minimal distraction testing environment
  • Readers for tests

The assigned case manager determines what accommodations an individual will receive based on the documentation provided and conversations with the individual. Other accommodations may be considered based on the individual's past experiences and benefits from such an accommodation.

Library services

  • he library has over 1.5 million items, including books, journals, newspapers, DVDs, CDs, musical scores, microforms, e-books and e-journals.
  • There are over 400 online research databases, providing access to over 70 million full-text articles from the best academic journals in the world.
  • You have free access to over 1 million streaming music titles and 100,000 streaming videos.

Medical services

A student’s university experience and academic success is intimately associated with their overall health and wellness. As Director of Student Health Services (SHS), I am proud of the services we offer FGCU students to assist them when they are sick, to educate them on healthy lifestyle choices, and to protect them through vaccination, education and accessibility.

Student Life

Campus life

On-campus housing is made up of three sections: North Lake Village, South Village, and West Lake Village. North Lake Village is located on an 80 acres (320,000 m2) lake and features apartment-style residence halls, with waterfront recreation. West Lake Village was previously owned by American Campus Communities and formally called College Club Apartments. Housing 501 students, the University purchased the apartment complex for $17 million and the apartments officially became part of FGCU Housing and Residence Life in October 2010.
