The HafenCity University Hamburg — University of the Built Environment and Metropolitan Development) (HCU Hamburg) — was founded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg on January 1, 2006 as a merger of four departments from three Hamburg universities.
The HCU is research- led . The complex challenges of the urban environment in the 21st century require an exploratory attitude . With approximately 76,000 books and magazines, a growing range of electronic journals and e-books, the main task of our library is supplying the HafenCity University with literature and information. It is also open to all citizens of the Hamburg region.

The interests of the students are represented at the HCU on different levels. The students in the degree programmes are organised into student representative bodies. At the highest level of the overall university, there is the Student Parliament (StuPa) and the General Student Council (Asta).
