About

History

Founded in 1947 under UH M?noa’s Extension Division and called the “Hilo Program,” UH Hilo was organized under its present name in 1970. UH Hilo has grown and changed throughout the years to meet the educational needs and aspirations of the community.

Education

The purpose of our university family is to challenge students to reach their highest level of academic achievement by inspiring learning, discovery and creativity inside and outside the classroom. Our responsibility is to improve the quality of life of the people of Hawai?i, the Pacific region and the world.

Research

University of Hawai?i at Hilo faculty conduct place-based, applied research of short- and long- term benefit to the people of Hawai?i Island and the state. For example:

  • UH Hilo faculty do world class research on indigenous languages that helps promote therevitalization of the Hawaiian language and culture..
  • The astronomy faculty have access to the world’s finest telescopes on Maunakea and their goal is to have the best undergraduate astronomy program in the world.
  • UH Hilo faculty in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources, are doing research on alternative energy and agribusiness.

Student services

Kilohana's mission is to support the learning and retention of all UH Hilo students by fostering the development of independent, self-motivated learners through subject-specific support and academic skills development. This is accomplished by building a network with other units on campus so that faculty and the other members of the campus community are aware of, and utilize effectively, the full spectrum of services that support success.

Housing services

  • The residence halls for students attending the University of Hawai?i at Hilo are a special part of the University community. Residence halls house students from all the islands of Hawai?i along with students from the mainland and foreign countries. The UH Hilo University Housing Program is dedicated to providing you with an atmosphere that will give you a sense of belonging to the campus and help you quickly become a part of campus life.
  • The residence hall living experience will provide you with numerous personal and academic growth opportunities. All residence halls have trained staff to assist students with academic and personal development. 

Library services

The Edwin H. Mookini Library is a gathering place and a gateway to many sources of learning and knowledge for the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College ‘ohana as well as our diverse Hawai‘i Island community. With a spirit of aloha and commitment to excellence, the Library provides resources and services to encourage academic success and develop information-literate.

ICT services

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a wide array of services to support the teaching, learning, public services, administration and research endeavors of the students, faculty and staff of the UH community. ITS works closely with other offices across the system to meet the challenging and expanding communication technologies needs of the university.

Medical services

Health insurance is highly recommended for all students. A University of Hawai'i endorsed student health insurance plan is designed for students and is generally less expensive than most other health insurance plans.
