Sewanee The University Of The South

Tullahoma, Tennessee, United States
Known familiarly as “Sewanee” by its students, faculty, staff and friends, The University of the South offers an unmatched educational experience. The university remains purposefully small and dedicated to building a sense of community.

About

History

Sewanee was founded in 1857 by clergy and lay delegates from Episcopal dioceses throughout the south. They selected a site in Sewanee, atop the Cumberland Plateau about 50 miles west of Chattanooga, and local landowners and the Sewanee Mining Company donated nearly 10,000 acres for the enterprise.

Education

The University of the South is an institution of the Episcopal Church dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in close community and in full freedom of inquiry, and enlightened by Christian faith in the Anglican tradition, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds, to the end that students be prepared to search for truth, seek justice, preserve liberty under law, and serve God and humanity.

Research

Assistant Professor of Biology, Kristen Cecala, was awarded a grant from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.  Coupled with internal support, this grant provides funding for Sewanee students to conduct research with Professor Cecala on predictors of salamander distributions on the Cumberland Plateau. Specifically, the research will evaluate variables that limit the distribution of the Cumberland Dusky Salamander, a recently described species only found on the Cumberland Plateau.

Career

Career and Leadership Development staff members coach students and alumni as they explore and pursue career possibilities and develop their leadership abilities. We assist in this process by helping students connect their strengths, interests and skills with knowledge about careers as they prepare for lives of leadership and service both within and beyond the gates of Sewanee.

Library services

The primary mission of the Jessie Ball duPont Library is to provide the members of the academic community with access to resources that support the current and anticipated instructional, research, and service programs of the University of the South. In addition, the Library contributes to the culture and informational resources of the surrounding community.

ICT services

Computers with access to the Internet are available on all floors of the library.

Students, faculty, and staff doing academic research have preference. Community members should use the computers on the main floor of the library.

We reserve the right to limit the amount of time an individual user can devote to a single session.
