Eastern Virginia Medical School

Virginia, Minnesota, United States
EVMS is one of the only schools of medicine and health professions in the nation founded by the community, for the community. We are focused not only on preparing the next generation of health-care providers, but also on translating discovery into better health care for the people of Hampton Roads.

About

History

In the 1960s, civic leaders in Hampton Roads sought to improve care in the region and created a bold dream to build a medical school. Thanks to determination and community commitment, EVMS opened its doors in 1973, forever transforming the landscape of health care in Hampton Roads.

Education

EVMS prepares learners for careers as competent and compassionate physicians, health-care professionals and scientists. Our students benefit from the broad range of instruction provided by our full-time faculty, who work in concert with health-care professionals throughout the community.

Education at EVMS empowers students, residents and fellows to make an impact on the people they serve. We offer unique, hands-on approaches to learning, such as:

  • Community service-based activities for underserved populations.
  • Participation in institutional quality improvement and advocacy efforts.
  • Partnerships with regional or global health organizations.

Research

  • EVMS is the largest biomedical research institution in southeastern Virginia. More than 100 EVMS faculty members are engaged in basic and clinical research focused in areas where the community has pressing needs.
  • Innovative research has brought EVMS to the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries—from the pioneering of in vitro fertilization in America by the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, to the recognition of new cancer detection and treatment methods at the Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center and the progress being made toward bringing us one step closer to a cure for diabetes at The EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.

Career

  • Students in the program earn a Biomedical Science Master's degree with a speciality in Laboratory Animal Medicine in two years. With new and more restrictive animal protection guidelines, the scientific and research industries urgently need highly qualified personnel to lead and manage their laboratory animal research activities in a highly competent manner.
  • Many exciting opportunities exist including those in academia, industry (biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies), and government. Laboratory animal experts are involved in veterinary care, teaching, animal resource management, refinement of animal models, development of alternatives to animals in research, and independent research.
