About

History

Founded in 1960 as Christopher Newport College, a two-year branch of the College of William & Mary, we are in Coastal Virginia, in the city of Newport News. Christopher Newport gained independence in 1977 and became a university in 1992.

Education

Many of the top careers today didn’t exist 20 years ago. Studying the liberal arts and sciences provides a breadth and depth of knowledge that will prepare you to take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself in today’s global marketplace.

Research

The Wason Center has the capability to conduct telephone, online, mail, and multi-mode surveys. Telephone-based surveys are conducted in the state-of-the-art survey research laboratory with 24 call stations, each equipped with the latest computer hardware and survey software. The lab uses the Voxco telephone survey software (CATI), a leading global provider of survey software.

Career

The Center for Career Planning firmly believes that you get jobs by talking to people, so we create opportunities for students to connect with professionals all throughout their time at CNU and beyond.

Medical services

A Certificate of Immunization form, detailing immunization requirements and including a Tuberculosis Screening Form, must be completed and signed/stamped by a licensed health care professional. Students are required to receive the Meningococcal vaccine OR sign and submit a Meningococcal Waiver form to the Office of the Registrar for their file to be complete.

Student Life

Campus life

The traditional boundaries of the Christopher Newport University campus have been Warwick Boulevard, Shoe Lane, and Prince Drew Road in Newport News. In recent years, however, the university has "jumped" Warwick Boulevard, buying and demolishing properties in the immediate area to expand. The part of campus that is east of Warwick Boulevard is referred to as "East Campus" and is primarily used to house upper-class students.

Sports facilities

At Christopher Newport it’s easy to stay active with programs and facilities to match every fitness level. With modern fitness equipment in the Trieshmann Health and Fitness Pavilion, it’s a great place to work out. We also offer dozens of fitness classes, such as cycling, Pilates, body sculpt, yoga and Zumba.

Student clubs

From The Captain’s Log student newspaper to the Neuroscience Club to the Ultimate Frisbee Club, Christopher Newport boasts a wealth of student involvement on campus. The Office of Student Activities supports over 200 student clubs and organizations and provides resources, leadership training and event planning consultation for all students.

Accreditation

Christopher Newport is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award degrees at the baccalaureate and master’s degree levels. SACSCOC is one of six regional accrediting commissions in the U.S.
