RMC is now over one hundred years old. It was founded in 1874 when the Dominion Government , led by Alexander Mackenzie, passed an act in Parliament to establish a military college "for the purpose of providing a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to thorough knowledge of the military profession." On June 1, 1876, the Military College of Canada opened its doors to the first class of eighteen gentlemen cadets.
RMC delivers undergraduate academic programmes, together with a range of complementary programmes. These programmes are offered in both official languages. As Canada’s military university, RMC also provides undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, and professional development education, both on campus and at a distance, to meet the needs of other members of the CAF and the Department of National Defence (DND). As a national institution, RMC endeavours to share its knowledge with civilians with interest in defence issues. RMC encourages research appropriate to a modern university and seeks out research opportunities that support the profession of arms.
The Royal Military College of Canada, in partnership with 4 other universities, is building a rich research agenda in the humanities and social sciences.
All ROTP and RETP OCdts will be required to live on campus. Single rooms are normally provided for Fourth Year officer cadets. Other senior cadets are allocated single rooms on a space available basis. First Year officer cadets are quartered in double rooms. All residences are co-ed. On-campus dining is provided. Cadets of the UTPNCM program do not live in residence. Officer cadets who are married or have common-law status may request permission to live out.
The RMCC Health and Wellness Working Group (HWWG) was created more than a year ago to promote and enhance the health and wellness of all faculty, staff and students. This working group aims at developing, supporting, synchronizing and assessing programs to ensure that that the College remains a safe, positive, respectful, harassment-free and healthy place to learn, teach, research and work.
The RMC Campus is situated on Point Frederick just east of downtown Kingston, Ontario. It is a beautiful location, overlooking the city, the entrance to the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
The Athletic Component is one of the four Components of the Royal Military College of Canada. The Athletics Program is designed to provide opportunities for all officer-cadets to participate in physical activities and sports that are mentally demanding in order to develop their overall physical capabilities, self-confidence and leadership.
Recreation Clubs are created and organized by Officer Cadets with the primary intent of providing leadership opportunities for students. They also help to develop the social skills of those who choose to get involved and to introduce different leisure and athletic activities to the RMC community that may not already be offered through the varsity and intramural programs.
